Philips 'Sequenza Special' 412 377-1 (1984 LP: originally Philips 835303AY -1965). Recorded: National Philharmonic Hall, Warsaw. CD-RW transfer. Original surface: no auto-declick/re-eq. Sleeve-note+Labels / SRG7+EMG+HighFidelity+Hi-FiNews reviews >>> (original Mega storage now full)
Thanks for another great transfer! I wasn't familiar with the repertoire or the recording, so this was a nice introduction to some new music - I'll be on the lookout for this on vinyl! Thank you as well for including the contemporaneous published reviews!
ReplyDeleteTin Ear, your transfer has given me a new appreciation for Lutoslawski! You’ve inspired me to seek out both the Rowicki and Ozawa recordings!
ReplyDeleteDid mention this (on your blog) -so it filled-up Mega quite nicely (hence no 24-bit transfer).
DeleteNever had SXL/Kletzki but do ASD/Ozawa (originally in '72) - very dynamic/brash. Maybe this Philips is a bit 'filtered' -certainly compared to a Muza Moniuszko/Rowicki (Mono/'64).
One of my first eBay LP purchases was 6LP Electrola: Lutoslawski box - very expensive in 1979 - only £6.12... Transfers have the (sort of typical) Electrola cloudiness. Only UK reissue (have) is DRM (ED29 1172) of Symphonic Var c/w Busoni/Schmidt.
The one I'd (sort of) intended doing was ED29 1215 (Szymanowski VC 1/2 -Kulka). Initially an Electrola import. This also DMM (but not DRM) - however, the excellent Muza version/Nimbus pressed is on this blog. Nimbus also did (have) his 2nd Sym + Harnasie ballet - the Symphony etc is very lush.
Interesting how reviewers choose differently among those 3 works: my favourite is the Venetian Games.
I just found a sealed copy of the Philips SABL of the Rowicki on Ebay for $8. The pairing of the Concerto with the Funeral Music and Venetian Games gave it the edge over the ASD for me. Thanks for introducing the recording to me!
Delete99pee in September 2018. The Ozawa/Lutoslawski reissue was ED29 0134 c/w a single-sided Bartok CfO (my ASD just adds Galanta, I think)...strings apparently still hard-edged.
DeleteAbsolutely stunning!! Thanks a lot!!
ReplyDeletePopular post (was on CD) Should've stuck with 16-bit/CDRW to conserve space..
DeleteSequenza are superb vinyl but just a few pre-1963/4 (1958 Milhaud 4 Seasons here since 2011).
Was thinking of uploading HMV ASD639 (Messiaen/Koechlin/Boulez) with a Sequenza of Bartok Divertimento (also 1965/BBC-Dorati).
