You do come up with the most marvelous finds - many thanks
ReplyDeleteHello. I did give this one a mention a few months ago - also Sargent's BBC SO/ Rachmaninov Sym.3 - but that was reissued on MfP - probably worldwide - as with Lawrance Collingwood's fine LSO/Columbia Elgar 'Nursery Suite', etc: the latter, I think, sounding a little better as the original LP. I've Paul Doktor's 1968 recording of Walton's Viola Concerto (& Hindemith's Schwanendreher) coming-up shortly (never on CD??)...though, sadly, don't have the RPO/Sargent/William Primrose mono of the same coupling..
ReplyDeleteDon't think I've mentioned that one before; & there were previous comments, elsewhere, that the blog was a bit 'low-brow' - so maybe 'best-avoided'.
ReplyDeleteWhen there are original/MfP LP's to choose from it can be difficult to decide which is 'best' (reissues usually having more treble detail/but less 'body').
Thank you, Frank.
ReplyDeleteThe Gramophone archive with no pdf files is a sh**
(sorry)
Don't you think?
Thought you may like (?) this 'forgotten' version of Tallis Fantasia..
ReplyDeleteTBH - I mainly miss the ability to 'read' the old adverts!!
If the old 'pen-portrait' EMG reviews were more 'interesting' then I'd include them here (though may upload, sometime, my 1947 onwards complete copies - the earlier had longer reviews/few records). They thought the 1940 Boult 'Tallis' was superior (but not as sound) - also the Collins/Decca (from a quick comparison it sounded less good, to me; with 'wiry' string-tone on my re-cut LXT)..
