DeleteAnyway..really want to devote some time to playing part of a huge decades-old backlog of LP's (no point having them if they never get played)...and wanted to forget about the blogs.
Regarding Maazel; have previously thought of doing some transfers as the earlier DGG (now mainly out-of-copyright) seem to have been on CD only in a few instances (the Concert Hall I can't touch) and, without checking, possibly have the majority of his discs (though the mono Berlioz only as a 'stereo transcription') .
The 1963 EMI R.Strauss LP may come out of copyright (not on CD?) - but don't have the 1962 Decca/Beethoven.
Astonishing. I thought I knew Boult's LPs, but I had no idea about this. He treated this music with the same care as everything else, witness the exquisite treatment of the Naila valse. He made quite a few LPs of "lighter" fare; there are some very good Reader's Digest recordings on Chesky, so I suspect he really enjoyed it.

DeleteYes: done more out of a sense of Obligation - rather than Enthusiasm (been like that 'for years'!)..
This did seem to me a glaring omission, and he seems to achieve a very fine response from the LPO (who possibly enjoyed playing these a bit more than Boult's 'normal LP fare'..??)
Was going to couple this with the RD Swan Lake/Nutcracker - but saw the timings were well over 'a CD's worth' - and didn't feel like additionally dubbing those 2 'New SO' discs from 1960..
Previous to this had been intending to upload Mackerras/ROHO in La Source (from where the Naila waltz derives) / Two Pigeons - have the 1964 XLP/SXLP (30022) - never on CD, possibly - so may do so sometime (I'm never sure if folks turns these into CD's - so want '80 minutes-worth'..)?
I leave them on my hard disk and play via squeezebox, so don't care about the length of the file. The RD Swan Lake is on Chesky, and I think the Nutcracker has reappeared somewhere. Don't feel under any obligation, we are all grateful for whatever you care to do.

Update: the Nutcracker is currently on qobuz, as is the Swan lake, but both at hefty prices. The "Pathetique" is also there, but at reasonable cost.

I have just listened to this once more - it really is superbly played and conducted. Plus who was the recording engineer? Its magnificent; Les Chasseresses contains some of the best-tuned timpani that I have heard on disc, and good solid bass, with recognizable notes, not just growls. AB could take on the specialists (Wolff, Desormiere) and beat them at their own game. If there was a lot of cleaning up to do, then you have done it well.

DeleteApparently (although the Delibes isn't mentioned in the scarce 'ICRC' 1995 Vol.1/2 "The Nixa Story") it was very likely a Kurt List/John Snashall 'Westminster' effort..issued in the USA on that label.
'Coppelia' mainly had the slight 'background' - but some minimal 'de-click' doesn't seem to have harmed the 'delicacy'...so that made it a bit more presentable (Marble Arch being a 12/6 job!!) - though still need to edit the files, as some 'suspicious' repairs are made by the software..
I suppose this will eventually turn-up on CD...it certainly is too good to leave to 'an amateur' like me!!!

DeleteAs mentioned elsewhere on your blog, I have a number of these Pye Boult issues. If you are transferring the Marble Arch issues I am sure you will be aware that Mr Dutton attempted to modernise the sound and re-transferred some of these.to this label.
I have the Mendelsohn Italian / Scottish and it is an absolute stinker with added reverb, screeching strings and severe wow in the finale of the Italian.
The more I listen to your remastered posts, the more obvious it becomes that knowledge and experience (not forgetting perseverance and hard work) brings greater success than all the expensive equipment the 'professionals' use. Despite not doing your transfers for financial returns, the accolade professional would not be inappropriate.

I've just finished the first edit of something - 2+ hours for under 30mins of music...but the first 'time-wasting' for a week or two!!
I may have one of the Boult (Italian?) on Concert Hall (c/w Barbirolli) but won't transfer any more Marble Arch - but have no idea what Dutton does; presumably another who applies 'Morticians Rouge' (as Romy The Cat described Rose's Rejects); I just do a Penny Plain 'look no hands' job - but the equipment I use (and always have, since a Teenager) is pretty 'professional/expensive'.
Whether I wish to continue (or for free)..well...but at least I've listened to some LP's that otherwise wouldn't have been heard....but would much prefer to listen to lots more with no trouble/darned 'editing', apart from some wet-cleaning..

DeleteI often re-read your blog which I find very informative and have further thoughts on points which are raised. Having read again the appreciative comments for your Boult issues, It occurred to me how useful it would be to hear Boult's BBC 78s from the 1930s & 40s. I am not thinking of the ones regularly re-issued like The Planets, Elgar Enigma, Tallis Fantasia etc. He made quite a few discs of overtures (eg King Lear,) and shorter pieces. I have Beethoven Symp 8 and Mozart Symph 32 among others and would love to hear them in good transfers. The only CDs that I know of are in poorish transfers.

DeleteBill Anderson made some transfers of Boult/BBC 1930's material - I can't recall how extensive - but think it was Enigma + Tchaikovsky String Ser. (?) - presumably from Victor pressings: mine are 30's HMV DB's ...'say no more'!
In that period (outside the obvious stuff) I've only the Hebrides Overture (BBC) - and one of the acoustics (Hansel & Gretel) - but a discography/listing shows there are lots of single-disc releases - which, presumably, have been subsequently neglected (maybe they have a bad survival rate: played-to-death overtures)?
Hint taken - I wouldn't want to get in the way of anybody's listening. Remove the reply button, go away and listen! Assume eternal gratitude.

DeleteNeither were the Irving/ROHO Delibes LPs reissued after their late issue in the US on the full price RCA LPs LM-2035/36? Rather late issue here as mono-only recordings compared to the EMI CLP issues. Its like they ran out of things to issue and just tossed these out. Plus the LPs had no notes included, just credits and Degas covers. Distinctly low-budget.

I have the LP of this (the Boult Delibes on Westminster XWN 18241, mono) and am very happy to have found someone who has ripped it to digital. I could scan the front and back of the LP and make it available if anyone is interested. But I would need to know how and where to send the files if they are to be uploaded. Presumably the same cover as used for the original PYE NCL cover (at least the one I found on eBay)?: but I only did this as the Marble Arch sleeve-designs are pathetic - though I guess the sleevenotes, by Burnett James, are those from the original?

Hello Tin Ear, thank you for the suggestion. I have never done such an upload. Does one have to register/pay to do that? My guess is that your sleeve notes may be the same as mine: 7 paragraphs by Peter Hugh Reed, Editor Aerican REcord Guide; a para each on Boult and the record (RIAA roll off, etc. ) Anyway, let me know how to upload. I will scan and make jpgs of these. My scanner does not take 12 inches in both dimensions, so I may have to be a bit creative. With respect to uploading, who knows, when I find some time I might try to digitize some records, but I don't have time to do any repair work on scratches, etc. Also my audiotechnica turntable to usb might not meet the high standards of this page.

DeleteI used to, perforce, use "Sendspace" - which is fine for small files.
Your sleeve-notes are different to Burnett James' UK one for PYE.
Your scanner software should include an editing function to merge A4 scans..if you don't have that then there are free programs - 'Photobie' and 'Photoscape' - though the latter may be a bit dubious re: some 'adware'..
I've not used either as have Canon's Arcsoft bundle..or you can upload the 'raw' scans - in a zip folder - and I can edit them..
There are some 'de-click' programs - but I only use one, kindly provided, which is 'the best/for professional work', however it does damage/veil the inputted sound-quality - even at the lowest settings I use (very rarely: this being one of the few occasions)

There are 4 files original size front and back; and reduced size front and back. I have software to merge images, but thanks for suggestions.
Now what? Do I leave the files there? Or, perhaps better if you grab them and put them in some more permanent place?
