Hi TinEar: if the Phoenixa CD is to be believed, it was 28/29 December 1957. 19 June 1956 was the 8th symphony recorded by the Mercury team. However, EMI reissue CDs are not totally reliable when it comes to data. I only know this from that CD, so look forward to hearing it from the source. I think Boult is usually more reliable as a guide to RVW than Barbirolli, but AB himself wrote to JB saying he admired JB's ability to turn on the emotion, which AB admitted that he lacked. In this symphony however, I think Boult's cooler methods pay off in the finale - the climax in his hands is absolutely terrifying.

Was misled by the MoosicWeb review by Herr Barnett - where the dates are: (2)1956 (8)1957..but #8 was reviewed by Gramophone in Aug.1956..

Given the mediocre sound of the 1965 stereo LP (not apparent with the Gounod/Dvorak if you compare the bucolic CCL30153 with the 1967 GSGC) I thought it may be somewhat due to the stereo taping compared to the mono...or not....hence this upload - originally intended for Oct.2010...so probably forgot that I intended correcting the date!
EMG didn't like Barbirolli - the above review is not dissimilar to theirs for his Elgar 2...

Malcolm Walker's discography of Barbirolli (at the back of Michael Kennedy's biography) gives 28-29 December 1957 as the dates for this recording.
The '50's Barbirolli's stand-up quite well - but EMG kept-on about his 'style' until nearly his last gasp.
DeleteHowever, there's little justification uploading any more Barbirolli's as they are likely 'all' on CD; but thought this 'in-your-face' mono was technically interesting/worthwhile.

Anyway, out of curiosity, how does this compare to the EMI/Nixa CD (I don't know if the linked review to Dutton's later mastering is exactly the same 'sound' as EMI's earlier-on....I sort of assume it was 'tweaked' (?)

ReplyDeleteYes..very nice - almost 100 downloads (I see the Klemperer/Mahler 2 is now over 500)- but suspect this is the last upload and will remove the 'comments', as you have done, in a couple of days and 'mothball' the blogs....

DeleteThe PYE mastered/pressed Barbirolli Society RVW 7 (HMV originally) is quite good too - though am now verrrrry bored manually removing 'ticks'n'pops from 'mint' LP's
