The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Otto Klemperer
Columbia SAX 2350 Original 1960 pressing/matrices: YAX 269 -2 / YAX 270 -2. Recorded: 27-29 March 1957, Kingsway Hall.
'Mr Pristine's' version apparently has very poor phase stability @c.26% - whereas even my 'slightly defective' initial transfer of Brahms 4 was @ 87%!! A 'Fanfare' review castigated the 'Pristine Audio' LP dubbings..
Slightly re-edited October 2022 and now 4 movements. Transferred with a JVC Z-1 Shibata cartridge. Slight stylus suspension fault which didn't seem to affect the sound - but could be seen on the RH channel waveform. The JVC Z-1 uses the same Beryllium cantilever but the Coils aren't 'laminated' -so has a lesser performance than the JVC X-1 Shibata (used extensively on the 'Historical' blog) Sleeve-note >>>

its rendition by Klemperer has been among my favourites since i've heard it for the 1st time.
Before uploading the 1st I'd like to know if there are any 'sound problems' with this!!!
DeleteI don't really intend uploading Sym. 2/3 + the 2 overtures - but may consider the mono Haydn variations (33CX 1241 c/w Hindemith 'Visione')...as was intending uploading some mono Philharmonia's (Dobrowen/Malko).
Great recording and great transfer. Thank you for sharing this. No 'sound problems' whatsoever. Quite the contrary. Look forward to your 1st!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't normally ask for 'second opinions' - but am somewhat bemused by the RH channel's 'performance' (if you check the file/s via 'Audacity' you'll see what I mean) and it might have something to do with the suspension (30-odd years old..as are most of the cartridges/styli I use though never seen this 'effect' before!) - but listening to mvt.1 via the CD-RW it seemed rather decent (the treble, at least via that recorder, was slightly more 'obvious' than listening to the LP).
DeleteIt's not as though I only have one cartridge (have, probably, 30 different combos) but may use a different one for the 1st (I've never listened to Klemperer's 2nd -or, hardly, the 3rd: was thinking of uploading the Cantelli/Philharmonia of that from the 'best' source...a new/original 10" BLP.
BTW: the 4th, above, is in the original 'shop-condition': never wet-cleaned in over 50 years...and was, fortunately, reasonably silent-surfaced!
BTW2: if copyright allows may, in 2013, upload Klemperer's 'Deutsche Requiem' from the original Columbia SAX's: which sound superior to the 1970's SLS box-set reissue...
I aim you to transfer the 1st symphony, this PU set up seems to work very good, as I told you, 87% of phase stability is normal, and 0.1dB difference between channel is not significative. Could you please told us which cartridge and stylus did you use for this transfer? Thanks again.

DeleteAm uncertain whether I should use this particular cartridge for uploads (also used it for the Elgar 2/Barbirolli: and would, anyway, have been happier to have had the 1978 reissue of that - as Barbirolli's Vaughan Williams Sym.7 sounds superior in the 1977 PYE recut (SJB100) compared to the HMV ALP...
..hence the 'delay' in uploading Klemperer's Brahms Sym.1..
