Little Suite for string orchestra, op.1
Prelude: Andante con moto  ~  Intermezzo: Allegro moderato  ~  Finale: Andante con moto - Piu mosso

Tivoli Concert Symphony Orchestra  conducted by  Carl Garaguly
Vox / Turnabout  TVS 34049   1968 Decca release/matrices: S 2683 -1L / S 2684 -1L
Cleaner tape-to-disc transfer than the US Vox versions - though the recording is somewhat bright (so have marginally treble-enhanced the Suite) but which now sounds excellent and exciting; as also is the performance/orchestra... Recorded: c.1960 ?    Not on CD    Sleeve-note >>>

  1. You are from the same mould as I - Aldi and Lidl - the tops/life savers! Cannot do without them.

    Cheers.

An outstanding version, sounding exactly like my LP copy!

Do you by any chance have the relatively contemporary stereo Turnabout LP of the suite "Once Upon a Time" by P. E. Lange-Mueller, conducted by Johann Hye-Knudsen?

    1. Hi Steve, I recall the good review - but, even with around 125 UK Turnabouts later-on, it never turned-up (nor the Nielsen Commotio) - despite getting EMI 'oddities' like Gade's Elverskud and the Violin Conc (1985/1983 - the latter not on CD the last time I looked)

It was a very good Lp of marvelous music. The Swedish tenor sounded remarkably like a reincarnation of Bjoerling. I managed also to acquire a Swedish LP of this -- might have been from an HMV affiliate -- that was also in stereo, with cleaner sound. Now the entire collection of 13,000 Lps has been sold but this remains one of the elusive items that I never found on a CD issue.

Come to mention of it, though not in any way relevant, years ago while perusing record covers, I found a listing for the D'Indy Second Symphony in a French mono-era recording -- might have been Cluytens or another French/Belgian conductor -- and despite looking thru WERM, countless catalogues, and Lp listings, never found it. My guess is that it dated from around 1954 to 57, and I've always been curious about the performance (which would be a nice alternative to Monteux and Plasson.) Ever heard of this obscurity?

    1. D'Indy is entirely missing as a composer in UK catalogues - my only other source would be the EMG Monthly letters - and only if they'd imported it.
I guess you got a good price for that lot - possibly realising that only a few would ever be played again! Wretched things are more trouble than they're worth - obsolete technology from the start - but CD's seem to be little more than a cassette-tape replacement...or, at least, how they're produced.

  4. Thank you for keeping this transfer available for such a long time. I quite enjoyed the symphony when I finally got around to listening to it the other day, particularly after the deadly serious Barber Symphony No. 1. It would be nice to hear the Serenata in Vano some time, if you were so inspired.

    1. Only SIX years..
Possibly would've added the chamber piece if I'd had an additional Turnabout/Nielsen in that category..though another consideration is that files on this blog are 'non-copyright'..
