Thank you for sharing this, I don't have the original files only those reposted/reedited ones. Very interesting what the reviewer said, I don't have Mr Rose sample but is not the first time that I read (and heard by my self) that some details were missed or like in this recording forte sound strident while the quietest part sounds flat. Anyway, your transfer sounds wonderfull and I would leave it untouched on my HD.

I don't like doing multiple re-edits/re-saves - but this hadn't been available since July 2012 (was on Mediafire..) and knew there were still some slight traces of surface-noise (a few still remain) not least because the recordings were transferred at such a very low-level (the Tchaikovsky looks more like 18 than 28mins, in terms of groove-area).
I don't have the SPA re-issue of that (and no longer have the original SXL) - but the Rachmaninov sounds slightly better than my two transfers on Decca SPA; however, what the reviewer heard on Rose's was the effect of noise-reduction/de-click-crackle - which gives an 'impressionistic' texture, with fine-detail/dynamics being noticeably curtailed...but I can't recall if he'd 'fizzed it up' as usual - to disguise the lack of clarity.
Other MusicWeb (and elsewhere...) reviewers appear Totally Deaf to such damage!!
I find Katin's performance of the Rachmaninov too 'subdued': some passage-work is really dully played - and had intended uploading the 1955 Richter on Parlophone PMA - or the Lympany CLP + the mono ALP of Michelangeli's #4, but am not currently bothering with transfers of anything..
Many thanks, the sound is gorgeous, and once again the first movement is better than the later ones - though i still find it engaging. The Tchaikovsky-piece, however, is very nice throughout.
ReplyDeleteI'll have a listen to Katin's LSO/Rignold: Khachaturian PC disc (there's also Fistoulari's 'Gayeneh'/LSO - both originally Everest records; currently NLA, I suspect) - as don't like Moura Lympany's mono performance.
DeleteThere's another 'Russian' LPO of this period - Fistoulari conducting Gliere: Red Poppy / I-Ivanov: Caucasian Sketches - the RCA mono; no UK stereo until the recent CD) - which is quite good.
