The trombone concerto is a hoot! Thank you for this, I've always loved this LP.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks - a super fun CD, heartily recommended to everyone.
ReplyDeleteHello David.
ReplyDeleteThis LP is certainly one to 'brighten the day' (though the Tchaikovsky is rather turgid).
Just checked the files downloaded over the past 7 days.... 1,121.
Frank,
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this HMV-Melodiya LP. I purchased this LP when it was first released in the USA on Angel-Melodiya SR-40108. The Angel LP cover boldly states, "full brass band panoply in the stunning sonics of stereo sound!" However, the Angel LP is actually poorly synthesized fake stereo from a mono original. I assumed that Melodiya had sent EMI a fake stereo tape and no one noticed. Imagine my surprise when I listened to your excellent transfer of the HMV LP and heard real stereo. This is just another example of the total incompetence and lack of care exhibited by Capitol Records when they took over EMI's classical operation in the USA in 1958. I read somewhere a long time ago that EMI stands for "Every Mistake Imaginable". From what I read in the news recently, it appears they are doing their best to maintain this reputation.
I'm not too aware of the Capitol/Angel 'Melodiya' catalogue, but do realise some weren't issued in the UK: so, presumably, not all the tapes derived from EMI UK?
ReplyDeleteThe sad demise of the Stanton cartridge, in June, has led to far fewer stereo releases here (the Rimsky's are via that PU - the rest are via the Decca), but had certainly intended uploading the fine K.Ivanov 'Antar' (even though the remainder in the box-set weren't, musically, always worthwhile)- as it far surpasses Morton Gould's Chicago version.
Looking-through Michael herman's discography, I can see a few EMI/Soviet items 'never on CD' - so they may make an appearance hereabouts.
