  2. Hello Yiannis.
Well (apart from being Grumpy when I get no 'comments') I'm a Happy Bunny as the transfer was so satisfactory - and I'd never previously listened to the lovely Arthur Benjamin composition/performance.
There was a 'Gold Seal' reissue of this - but never seen it. It would be interesting if anyone could offer Adler's previous EMI mono versions of (I think) the Benjamin/RVW.
Thanks for taking the trouble to comment: it is appreciated.

  3. Thanks, Frank! This is a wonderful LP. I cannot understand why it has never been reissued on CD. As always, the quality of your transfer is outstanding and the scans of the jacket are also very much appreciated.

  4. It probably sounds 'better' than the LP due to the latters low-level: but could happily 'live-with' this transfer..(and I'm a 'fuss-pot'..)
The Milhaud currently has a (much) larger number of downloads - though Adler seems less 'at ease' in this work.

Having a rummage-around for not-on-CD titles, I think there's one Previn/LSO: Mendelssohn 4 + Ruy Blas /Prokofiev 1 (UK RCA) - though recently noted that Pennario's Rach 1+4 (Previn/RPO) had a Japanese CD issue (though the US imported 'Dynagroove' LP masters weren't too good as sound, IMO).

Anyway - thanks for commenting as (as with other toiling- LP bloggers) it is helpful to get some feedback - though I've managed (at least here!!) to avoid the brickbats.

I'll try and get the 24/96 card 'sorted': though can't believe it would (now) be much of an improvement.

  5. An LP that I enjoyed until it and many others were ruined in a pipe leak and resultant flood. Thanks for restoring a treasure to my collection!

  6. Hello Don. If you sent a 'select list' (have 2 addresses: you probably know at least one?) I might be able to manage a request, or two: though don't think much has escaped CD-issue over the years (which does cause some problems for this blog..).
Wouldn't mind uploading Arnold's Guitar Concerto (+ Guiliani) - Bream/Melos Ensemble: have a Decca 1969 test-pressing (first UK stereo). Also in the RCA-line, would be interested in transferring Martinon/CSO Ravel/Roussel - from imported 'Dynagroove' metalwork. Excellent sound (as are some Leinsdorf's, ie: Heldenleben) + performances.

  7. Wow! You mean to tell me there is a SECOND copy of this very rare LP floating around?

Several years ago I made my own transfer from an American RCA LP with a marvelous caricature of Adler on the cover. I was eager to listen to your transfer from an English pressing. There are definitely differences in equalization. There is more dynamic range, upper frequency emphasis and a bit more surface noise on the British pressing. As was pointed out in the Gramophone review, the difference in perspective between the harmonica and orchestra is more pronounced. In the American pressing, everything is more recessed, more smoothed out- more mid-frequency emphasis, I would guess.

Which one do I prefer? Well, right now I am very partial to your absolutely superb transfer from a very fine-sounding source.

Thank you so much for this and the other treasures you have offered up! (For instance, I am taking your Mengelberg Beethoven transfers to the proverbial desert island!)

    Thanks,
    Al

  8. SHOCKED to 'hear' that there was 'more' surface-noise than an LSC....(the trouble I go to pre-post transfer is very considerable: and had no problems listening to just the 'raw' CD-RW...though I've noted that the transfer-level was rather low - so the vinyl material will have a greater 'influence'..

Might 're-visit' the Mengelberg/Beethoven files - as could probably remove some more 'ticks' (from the source material: which was massively 'clicky'.. (except for the 'Eroica').

  9. Come to think of it, your source may have been cleaner. It WAS a few years back and now I do remember taking quite a bit of time manually taking out the numerous pops, ticks, clicks and bumps on that LSC. It was also one of those notorious "dynaflex" pressings, which means I had to take some pains to clamp it down to the turntable to avoid the "dynaflex rumble"!

Your Mengelbergs were a revelation to me. I initially counted myself fortunate to find the Philips CD issues, but there were glories in those LP grooves that the remastering engineers totally missed!

  10. [cue John Barry’s 'Goldfinger'] »Gol-den Ear/Golden sounds he will pour in your ear [/cue]

Thank you so much, Frank! And thank youagain, for everything I havn’t commented on – which is (to quote gazillions of Gramophone reviewers) an »embarass de richesse«!

    All my best, Malatesta

  11. Frank: I don't think I have an address for you. So, my wish list would be any CSO/Martinon, the RCA Sessions 3rd/Lees Concerto for String Quartet and maybe even (if a poor memory serves me right)an album with Julian Bream "20th Century Guitar" with the Britten Nocturnal, Walton Bagatelles and the RR Bennett Concerto. There was a later album with that title but not the same coupling.

Always a pleasure to visit the Parlour!

  12. Another gem! Thank you, and thank you for all those files I've downloaded but not commented on eg Barber/Harris/Hanson/Piston symphonies, Nielsen wind concertos. Your efforts are not going unnoticed or unappreciated!

  13. I, possibly, get a little more 'response' than some other Blogs (it always strikes me as a bit 'desperate' to see, mostly, other Bloggers leaving the comments, elsewhere!).

The files (whether FLAC or WAV) are derived direct from the Audacity-edited and, previously, EAC-ripped file..so are as close as I can get to the original CD-RW (which usually sounds very close to the LP's sound/'feel').
