  2. Hello Buster. I should have called this blog 'Random Classics' !! .
Don't think I've heard nicer playing in the two Suites for Military Band; the Gramophone review is spot-on (have the Fennell's [+ Wicks] -in the EMI/Philips pressings - but the playing, by comparison, is a bit 'aggressive').

  3. What a good choice to upload.
No better advocate for her fathers music then Imogen Holst...a fascinating life, would love to get my hands on the recent biography.
Her recordings of Holst on Lyrita are also excellent.

  4. It's a bit 'short-measure' (& such a shame about the darned 'end-swish') so was thinking of uploading some other tracks - but the Decca/SKL Grenadier's Holst 1 was dreadfully recorded - and Brass Bands can be pretty bad (as the RCA/Chandos BDMB Bantock 'Prometheus Unbound' is on CD I tried the Fontana CWS/A.Mortimer - which was truly 'orrible. .
Don't think there would be much interest if I uploaded the RVW/I.Holst 'Folksongs' on WRC...
This CSD is rare - even the WRC reissue, I once saw, sold for quite a bit on eBay.com.

  5. Thank you so much for this! These are splendid performances and an excellent memorial to Imogen Holst, who is otherwise forgotten. I, for one, would love to hear more of her otherwise unavailable recordings.

  6. Decca Eloquence are releasing the Argo/I.Holst's, which likely only leaves the RVW on SCM46: Purcell Singers (+ 'Six Folksong Studies' for viola/piano).
SCM 50 (Holst/Finzi) is doubtless on CD: though that original LP was excellent.
Presumably the Melos Ens. Bliss: Oboe/Clarinet Quintets (SCM 42) isn't on CD.
Despite being 'pristine' copies, they would still take an age to edit...but will give them a listen (TBH never listened to SCM 42/46 !!).

  7. Frank,

Belated thanks for all your recent uploads. I must catch up with listening to them. Your attention to neglected British composers and performers is greatly appreciated.

    Happy New Year.

    regards,

  8. “Hello Joe. Ditto to you! .
Have finished editing a quite superb performance of the RVW '6 Folksong Studies' (SCM 46, above). .
May later try a transfer of two Aeolian String Qt. recordings of the same time...Summit stereo:- RVW:Qt.1/Elgar:Qt + Revolution reissue of Elgar:Pf Qnt/Bax: Legend (also for Viola/Pf) - previously 'under consideration'”

  9. Many thanks - I've never heard these Imogen Holst recordings. I'm sure my introduction to the Suites was the Decca recording you mention above, one of many Decca Eclipse (this one unusually genuine stereo) I bought as a youngster.

    All good wishes for 2011...

    Peter

  10. Hello Peter.
I may relent re: The Grenadier Guards (Decca SKL 4041) as the performance of Holst no.1 is so noticeably different (the other works were quite substantial: A.Wood/F.Rosse/J.Ansell - but I much preferred the EMI recording (Decca's dating from 1958 - as with the LP mastering).

  11. Thanks for making these recordings available for listening. Somehow the March from 'A Moorside Suite' has got on to the start of the 'Suite No. 1' file!

  12. No wonder I thought the Grenadier Guards version sounded different (that would also apply to the Fennell/Wicks..) - and can only say (having just checked the HMV LP) that it was caused by the banding of the disc - which is wider between that - and the following two band divisions - and the label shows the Suite as being 3 movements...and the previous sections of Moorside (banded as one) are so drowsily performed...
So..it looks like EMI's disc-cutting is at fault...

Vast hundereds of files have been downloaded...but I will re-edit this LP shortly from the WAV's - and re-upload: though cannot do much about the Hammersmith 'swish'..

  13. Wow, that was fast work! Thank you for sorting this so quickly. Good luck with the Hammersmith 'swish'. Roger

  14. 550 downloads of 'Moorside' before anyone noticed the error.

I probably only additionally have the Decca/Grimethorpe of that: so the truncation wasn't too obvious @ the time of editing (files are dubbed separately from the LP).

I think the Suite 1 sounds 'better' with the 'fanfare', in any event!!

Doubt I can do much with the Hammersmith 'swish' as it is too pronounced/spread in time - and I would risk installing 'artifacts' into the sound with further editing...but will have a go, anyway.
