Hi Frank - I thoroughly enjoyed this - I downloaded your files and was listening to them when I suddenly realized that I have this LP myself! So, thanks for (re)calling my attention to it....
ReplyDeleteFor me, both of Shoatakovich's "Year" symphonies (11 and 12) are rather weak pieces, but if forced to choose between the two I'd pick #12. It's shorter! And this is the best recording of it that I know.
Hello Bryan. I thought this a rather good performance upon first hearing it; so the lack of an easily accessible CD justified uploading it. Not sure how it ranks compared to my other LP versions - Mravinsky/Kondrashin (HMV Melodiya) - Haitink (Decca digital) - but it's way finer than the Philharmonia/Pretre (EMI)! The only Shostakovich I repeatedly listen to is #15 - in the Barshai CD version.
ReplyDeletei have this on lp thanks for it
ReplyDeleteThis same conductor made some vox recordings where he was known as O.D. nARC
ReplyDeleteHello again - Thanks. Your site is a memory of the years I worked in record stores - Jerry
ReplyDeleteLOL..I think it's a memory of the years I'd spent IN record-stores (though the majority here are from Auction Lots - which I was able to get (before eBay came along) for absolute Peanuts!

Thanks for this recording :)
ReplyDeleteAfter you listen to Symphony 11 conducted by Berglund (give it at least 2 listens), you won't be able to let it go! He makes every moment work! Takes it slow, letting the tension build (but not letting it drag), places emphasis in all the right phrases, with some great dramatic moments! Beats the Stokowsky IMO.

Hello.
DeleteWell - I have that Berglund '11' (HMV SLS 2LP - silver gatefold sleeve: coupled with with Symphony 6) - but I never made it to '2 listens' - as tend to find those 'provincial UK Orchestras' less than idiomatic in such repertoire...though did enjoy Berglund's 5th when issued as a single LP (originally coupled with the 10th) about 1978/9...all Bournemouth SO.
I've not heard the Stokowski 11 - and happily disposed of the Cluytens (on original UK Columbia 33CX) LP's!
