Thanks for making these available. Gamba strongly brings out the cinematic qualities in Arnold's scores. The performance of the Fifth in particular is exceptional, the best I've yet heard. Gamba is very measured in the Andante but clearly believes in the material enough to sustain the longer line. The music is thereby transformed: Arnold emerges as a more substantial composer as a result. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteHello Steven.
ReplyDeleteYou may not believe it - but these have been very popular!!
I consider all the performances to be top-rate and make a convincing case for them - and these are MD's I've played many times - especially the thrilling no.4..
One thing that concerned me with the 'live' 5th was that, at the time, I had the impression the sound-quality was deteriorating after the first 2 items.. .
The 5th was the first Arnold symphony I bought (CBSO/Arnold - over 35years ago... but the first of his compositions I recall hearing was the Concerto for 2 Pianos - in the 1969 Prom performance - which I bought, shortly after, as the Smith/Sellick/CBSO-Arnold HMV LP (Gordon Jacob's 2PC work on that never reissued on CD).
Arnold's Harmonica Concerto (in the Larry Adler RCA LP likewise hasn't had a CD issue.
