 Aubade for orchestra

This short orchestral work was commissioned by the BBC for performance at the 1964 Henry Wood Promenade Concerts; it is dedicated to the memory of John Hollingsworth - a conductor who was a familiar figure to Prom audiences until his untimely death shortly before, and who had conducted many of Bennett's early film scores.

Aubade (Morning Song) is prefaced by the following quotation from John Donne: ". . . And all the powerfull Kings, and all the beautifull Queens of this world were but as a bed of flowers, some gathered at six, some at seven, some at eight, all in one Morning, in respect of this Day". The piece is cast as a single slow movement in which the form of each of the outer sections reflects the A-B-A form of the work as a whole. The opening statement on horns and woodwind of a slow to unfold and mostly tranquil melody soon develops a more passionate curve. It then rises to a quickly reached climax on woodwind and strings, pulsed by a repeated-note figure on the brass, before gradually subsiding back to the gentler mood of the opening bars with the scoring now reversed between wind and strings. In the central section, the ascending horn phrase with which the piece began is transformed into a shimmer of woodwind arabesques, while the strings explore a new and more dance-like theme evidently associated with the repeated-note brass figure heard earlier. The dance episode is then restated a tone higher, this time with the woodwind arabesques failing instead of rising, in preparation for the altered return of the opening section of the piece. This return overlaps with the continuing arabesques, which now alternate descending and ascending versions of the initial melodic shapes. Thereafter, as the arabesques die away, the music resumes its original course, ending the piece as at the close of the first section, with the addition of a more prolonged and hushed cadence.

  2. These are great, topped only by the Gerhard Symphonies. THANKS!

  3. Have a few more C20 ARGO's not reissued - including: ZRG 5326 (Wind Quintets:Seiber/Gerhard/Fricker/Arnold) + ZRG 5475 (Instrumental - Horn-Clarinet-Violin-Piano: Banks/Bennett/Hamilton/Tate) that I may do 'soon'. I like the Jazz Calendar here - though the tape (presumably) was recorded pretty hard - but the performance is waaaay better than a live one on BBC R3 a few years back. A distinctly rare LP...!!

  4. Magnificent - many thanks! Ever seen an LP of the choral music of W. Gillies Whittaker, recorded by Viking Records for his centenary festival? If so, please put it up - I've been wanting to hear that for years! Keep up the wonderful work.

  5. Have now seen your query on another blog - more specifically detailed. NO - only have Viking 001 & 002.

  6. Yes, I've been hoping that someone who happens upon my message might have one. The Viking LPs you mention: would 'Among the Northumbrian Hills' be one of them? If so, may one respectfully ask whether an upload would be at all possible? Would be a great thing if you could. Nothing of his available anywhere.

  7. 001 is as you state - 002 is "Blow the Wind Southerly" (Whittaker's arr. of folk songs/pipe tunes - Gramophone reviewed 1980). Both new copies. Could make 'a meal of it' by adding Concert Hall 2339 "Northumbrian Minstrelsy" with Isla Cameron/Bob Davenport/Jack Armstrong + The Rakes - though no longer retain a couple more LP's 'in that line'. However..I'm strictly limiting the amount of time devoted to transferring ('editing') - so unless it's an easy 'job' maybe not - though, in fact, the wind quintet on 001 would fit in with some 'intended' uploads - 2 early LP's by the Albion Ensemble - wind music..and the Piano Qnt with the Aeolian's Elgar Pf Qnt... Maybe I should set-up a Paypal 'Donate' button to provide a carrot-like 'incentive' for this lark?!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'd certainly donate! The third LP (the one with the choral music) is certainly elusive. Anyway, the music's certainly worth hearing, as indeed are all your uploads.

  9. Well - as the number of downloads now approach 17,000, even a fixed 'One Pound if you feel like it, sometimes' would begin to cover some of my 'running-costs'...and might even pay enough so I can 'retire' to the South of France...like 'The Competition'.. Will have a think - but don't want a Till-full of bent red-cents.. Will anyway 'test' the Whittaker's (over a decade since I obtained them).

  10. Dear Fred,

    Your blog is really wonderful!
I am interested on an old (´60s) stereo Pye LP with the Symphony "Elegia" of Mccabe and works of Leighton and Cruft, by the LPO conducted by J. Snashall. Maybe you can support me...
    Thank you very, very much

    Gabriel

  11. Fred?? Sorry am missing that one (TPLS 13005). PYE 'Virtuoso' are, except for titles such as Dohnanyi's Piano Conc.1, pretty elusive...ie; sold poorly. I do have John McCabe playing Elgar's Piano Music on 'Prelude' - also the Decca SDD of British piano works (Bax, etc).

  12. Sorry, Tin Ear; I cannot understand where I read "Fred".
I am delighted of McCabe´s Symphony 3. I´d like to know symphonies of Havergal Brian not commercially available. They were issued on the pirate label Aries: 5, 14, 23, 13, 17, 24, 26, 19. Maybe...
    Thank you a lot!

    Gabriel

  13. Frank..actually! http://www.havergalbrian.org/discogra.htm shows the recordings of HB. I don't have the Aries material - only the Lyrita/EMI Lp's(available on CD) - but was thinking of adding CBS Classics 61612 (Sym 22/Psalm 23/English Suite) - but that might not be too interesting/'sought' ??

  14. Many thanks for the RRR posts..Works I don't know..Is there any chance you could make available the RRR Piano Concerto which filled out one of the original LP's..That would be splendid! Meantime thanks for these.

  15. Hello Sasha. With this 'post-1960 LP' material I won't upload anything currently (or recently) available on CD; though I appreciate the current CD's may not be easily obtainable everywhere (& nor does the Lyrita CD-R(?) look too 'attractive', in terms of its content). Will upload RRB's Trio for Flute-Oboe-Clarinet (1965 - Argo) before too long, though.

  16. Thanks Tin Ear..No problem with that..I'll look forward to some more RRR in due course..

  18. Hi Tin Ear,

I just made this blog in order to ask you if it is at all possible to get an invite to the Music Parlour Opera blog.

I'm not sure if there are special requisites but I truly enjoy the music you share and it would be a real gift.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hello Nick. Re: the 'Opera' blog. Upon reflection I thought it would be difficult to run that as well (like the 'Popular' one I have/had) - especially as there are rather few un-reissued complete Opera recordings - and I didn't want to rely on BBC material - so, although I would prefer to keep 'vocal' separate I thought it best to 'de-activate' it. To a degree what I would 'prefer' is one or two 'co-workers' on the Blogs to 'lighten-the-load' - given that it takes me so much time to edit just one LP..but folks have their own blogs - so not much chance of that - but I could never do more than, say, 50 LPs/year, - and have very little USA material - which is certainly interesting to me - and would broaden the scope of the blogs.

I have made the Opera blogspot 'open' again - with a comment re the above: - http://operaparlour.blogspot.com

  20. Wow isn't RRB wonderful!! His film music (which I actually rather like) has, for me, totally overshadowed his concert hall/opera house compositions..Now I've discovered them (thanks to blogs like this) I can't get enough! Also found out that he'd studied with Boulez and at Darmstadt which makes him all the more remarkable..Perhaps his very ability to write and play in several idioms has counted against him..Specialisation is more the norm I guess and easier to pigieon-hole..Looking forward to future RRB posts..Many thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hello Sacha. As these RRB's are proving 'reasonably popular' I'll try to speed-up some transfers. As well as those mentioned, "Commedia IV" (2 Trumpets-Horn-Trombone-Tuba) is on ARGO ZRG 813 (that track also on the Lyrita CD) - but the other tracks aren't on CD - nor are most tracks from ZRG 851: RRB's is the short 'Fanfare for Brass Quintet': these 2 LP's performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Possibly have some more RRB..

  22. Thank you, Tin Ear. I understand what you mean about the workload..no pressure, the way I see it each post is something very special and we are all grateful you take the time and care to share these treasures. Thanks for the re-opening of the other blog, I've bookmarked it.

  23. Just an update on the WHITTAKER. Have tested both LP's. 002 is a top-quality Decca pressing/mastering - of 'Music Parlour'-style singing + the Northumbian pipes - and 5mins of That is enough for me (about 15mins on the LP). 001 is a disasterous 1976 mastering/pressing by 'someone cheap'..The Anthem is grossly-distorted in parts - the Pf Qnt (which is nice) has more surface-noise than I can handle - but the (innocuous) Wind Qnt may be salvageable.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you very much. If you ever have the time to upload the other music from the 1st Symphony LP (Bax, Berkeley), I would be most grateful.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, for whatever you feel up to doing, I'll certainly be grateful, surface noise or no. By the way, which anthem is it on the LP? I haven't seen a detailed listing of the contents of this one.
    Maestro

  26. Right....RE BUKETOFF: I've found a 'coupling' for the Bax/Berkeley - BAX Symphony 3 LSO/Downes (1969) - never on CD (according to the 2008 LSO discography).. RE: WHITTAKER: The main problem with Viking 001 is 'bagging marks' on side 1 - which causes much surface 'noise' in places. The Anthem is: "I said in the noontide of my days" - quite impressive (organ acc.) - but the mastering was atrocious during this track on high velocity passages... If I do this it comes with a Health Warning - and I won't 'edit-away' the defects - except on the Wind Quintet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Never heard of this particular anthem before - but I can well imagine that it's impressive. No need to edit away defects - I'll be happy just being able to hear these things for the first time! Cheers, Maestro

  28. Many, many thanks for the Jazz Calendar recording. Could you possibly make available as well the R.R. Bennett Piano Concerto performed by Bishop? I would love to listen to it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hello. I mentioned (27 Aug -this thread) that I wanted to avoid material generally/currently available on CD. AFAIK I never listened to 'that side' - or, if I did, didn't listen to much. I'd intended (as mentioned 26 Aug) uploading some Instrumental - inc.RRB - but not sure I will ever do that, now, as may decide on a 'New Years Resolution' to delete these blogs. :~((

    ReplyDelete
  30. That would indeed be a shame.

  31. Wonderful - been looking for out Jazz Calendar for over 20 years - I'd though I'd never find it again. Thank you very much...

  32. I've never seen another copy of that LP - possibly my favourite 'jazz' composition.
Should, finally, get-around to adding some of the other titles mentioned in this thread (including RRB's 'Trio') - if I can find the 'spare-time'.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Might be the next one! (though have just scanned ZRG 5326 (London Wind Quintet Arnold/Seiber/Gerhard/Fricker) - & have 2 copies to try-out..

  35. hello there Tin Ear - "In these difficult times etc" ... i've been on a RRB thing at the moment whilst starting the long haul of reupping all my megaupload posts...darn that i didn't grab your Bennett's when i had the chance.....would love to invite you to my private blog The Jolly Dodgy Blogger ....take a look at my public one here and see if it pleases thee.

  36. With something like 600 deleted MegaUpload files it's difficult to know (a) where to start (b) where to 'park' them: likely not where the site has any servers located in the US !!!!
A secondary problem is that, aside from the earlier files, I only retain WAV's - and am not 100% certain that a FLAC subsequently made from a WAV is totally identical (I create FLAC/WAV @ the same time from the Audacity file)...and the file-sizes may preclude MediaFire (etc) for the original WAV's..but will check the RRB (heavily downloaded as with most other posts......)

Due to the small number of comments I'd decided to retire this particular 'widget' - but it might serve a purpose again..as otherwise recent comments can't be seen - except by me!!!

NB: Have looked @ the Half-Penny Kid (part of your linked John Bull blog)...though I might have my hands full next month (despite intending, in any event, 'dropping' these time-consuming blogs..)

  37. I would very much like to receive an invitation to your Jolly Dodger blog.

  38. Tin - Multiupload seems to be where folk were drifting even before this bombshell...I dont mind it at all...of course it could all be academic in a week or two if all the upload sites get the shivers...it's all up in the air....

dear bilinrio - putting you through right now...

    good cheer one and all
