Thank you very much for these! Can you please post the companion pieces on these discs also? I would love to hear them (and have the CDs in complete form).
ReplyDeleteIt would be rather unfair on the Record Companies to upload the Rawsthorne/Davies - as they are available on CD.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this unexpected treat. I am a big fan of Gerhard's symphonies and have only heard them in the (very good) digital performances on Montaigne CD. I am also a big fan of late 60s Argo and Emi recordings, so this is a double pleasure. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI think you might like these performances (and recording-quality..). Have seen a few negative comments re: Davis's commercial 4th (missing that one..) but can't see that applies to the RFH broadcast. I may 're-focus' this blog to more post-1960 LP material otherwise not on CD. Next could be unreissued [?] Rodney-Bennett (ie; Sym.1/Jazz Calendar/Aubade) when other tracks are on CD, as with the Gerhard 'flip-sides'...and there are some other ARGO's worth considering.
ReplyDeleteWonderful performances! Thanks for making these available. All my LPs were damaged in a flood, these among them. I am so thrilled to be able to hear them again.
ReplyDeleteHello Don. Might upload some more 'in that line' (if not on CD..) ie HMV 'Music Today' ASD's of Weill Sym.1/2 (BBC) Koechlin/Boulez (BBC) + the Prausnitz/del Mar albums. The BBC SO were, 'post Sargent', truly excellent in such repertoire - which is why I wish the BBC would re-broadcast any retained concerts - and the sound quality -'BBC balance'- was so excellent in that era. [BTW: am also uploading WAV's of the Gerhard]
ReplyDeleteMany thanks especially for this issue of the Concerto which I've been wanting to hear for ages.....
ReplyDeletePeter
Thanks for the welcome. I have enjoyed several of your downloads, most notably the wonderful Dorati Hary Janos.
ReplyDeleteAs for Gerhard, the 3rd Symphony is in my opinion the most successful synthesis of electronic sound and orchestra. A wonderful work, sadly never heard.
Thank you so very much for all these gems, especially Gerhard and Bennett!
ReplyDeleteHad two unreissued Argo LP's ('chamber music') containing Gerhard/Bennett in the lengthy 'to do' list..but have currently 'lost the urge' to continue editing these darned LP's... The Gerhard's were especially fine as recordings/performances/compositions: hence rather surprising they hadn't appeared on CD.
ReplyDeleteReally Great ...thanks again on your help.
ReplyDeleteHave just been listening to this FLAC of the BBC Radio broadcast of Symphony 4 - and it sounds excellent: in fact it sounded better via this FM transmisson (JVC T-X900L tuner & JVC TD-V711 cassette) - than the DAB/Digital version (Sony STDB-900 tuner/ Sony JA20ES MiniDisc deck) - so no longer bothered about finding the Argo LP (which may not be as good a performance; same conductor/orchestra).
